Giants no-no…so rare it is worth rehashing just a little more……
Quite a special feat, an quite a rare flavor of no hitter
There have been 240 No Hitters and 15 perfect games in the modern era (1900+)
Sanchez's feat was even a little more rare ..a no-hit, no-walk, game with an error….this has happened 8 times since 1900 and 6 times since 1920. Of these 8 times, the Giants have been involved 4 times, 2x on the good side Mathewson and Sanchez, and 2x on the bad side Muholland and Reuss. Of the 6 no walk no hit games with an error since 1920, the 8th inning error by Uribe was the latest the perfect game was lost……
8/15/90 Terry Mulholland For Phillies vs. Giants* In the seventh inning, leadoff batter Rick Parker reached first base on a throwing error by third baseman Charlie Hayes.
6/27/80 Jerry Reuss For Dodgers vs. Giants Throwing error by shortstop Bill Russell with two out in the first inning allowed Jack Clark to be only Giants base runner.
7/19/74 Dick Bosman For Indians vs. A's With two out in the fourth, Bosman committed an error when Sal Bando hit a slow roller between the third base line and the mound.
9/3/47 Bill McCahan For A's vs. Senators Stan Spence reached in second base with one out in the second inning when first baseman Ferris Fain tossed wildly to McCahan after fielding an easy grounder.
7/1/20 Walter Johnson For Senators vs. Red Sox
Second baseman Bucky Harris committed an error on Harry Hooper's ground ball to leadoff the seventh inning. Strikes out 10.
Another aspect of this game was the dominance with the punchout…..Sanchez struck out 11, which was one of 11 no hit/ no walk/10+ K game, with 9 being perfect games………(could not find strike out data for 9/3/47, and two pre 1910 games)
Anyway you slice it, it was truly a special performance, and not your usual no hitter….. but one of the most dominating performances of all time……
GAMEBALL and JOKE
07/11 PADRES at GIANTS
GAMEBALL
PANDA
Holy crap…..a day after hitting a monster shot that was upstaged by Sanchez, Panda took towering oppo shot to left that looked almost effortless……that gives the kid 15 on the year and suddenly the high average, low OBP hacker is turning into a Vlad like force in the lineup……and that’s no exaggeration…..in fact at 22 Pablo is a year ahead of Vlad's development…. posting a ridiculous 954 OPS and that’s before tonight's 2 for 3 with a HR and a walk……and that .950 OPS is realm of 30+ HR offensive cogs …..and after watching that easy oppo field power over the last few weeks…..30 bah……this kid will be 40 + before he is done……
TIP OF THE CAP :
MILLER
One of the unsung heros of 2009, came in a tough spot with 1st and 3rd and quickly got out of it and then proceeded to put up another 3 perfect innings to get the Giants into the 6th after Cain's early exit……considering we didn't have a lot of room for error with the bullpen, this was a HUGE effort
MEDDERS
Back to Back outings without a baserunner for the first time since Apr 7-8
WILSON
Pitched like he didn’t want to have to answer any questions next Friday……4 outs, 3 K's no baserunners……I think a 3-0 count was as close as he got to exciting…..I will take it……
ISHIKAWA
If I am all over you about the K's, I would acknowledge a K free night….his 4th complete game without a K in July…1 short of his "career high in a month"…..5x in April….and only July 11th, maybe he is making progress…….
JOKER
STAUFFER
Wooooo wait a second…..A Padres starter can throw 90+ MPH???? Is that fair???? After watching Geer and Banks throw so slow that they couldn't get pulled over in a school zone, Stauffer musta looked like Cy Young…..and except for Winn and Sandoval Stauffer was able to keep the Giants in check…….and in a twist of strategy, after spending 2 nights being able to hit Giants pitching….Stauffer decided to hit a Giants Pitcher instead……and it wasn't the conventional bean ball, as he cleverly used the bat to send a ball right at Cain…..knocking Cain from the game and likely from his first All Star appearance…….but the only thing running through my head right now is, what the hell is a Monkey Bumper, and why does Cain say it, like we are supposed to know what it means…….
SMACK OF THE STICK :
NEGATIVE NANCIES
Yes Strikezone got wide, yes Padres are weak……First of all, just checking Brooks F/X looks like the strike zone was fairly consistent for both sides….. and second if I cared enough to take the time to look at relative strengths of teams that were No Hit, I would bet that more often then not they would end up being weak times….but I would rather put the effort into my fruitful use…….really not worth it to me……
